Advanced Surf Guide North Shore Oahu
Founder of Hawaiian Surf School and lead Hawaii Surf Guide, Ken Bradshaw is a Co-Director of the World Tow Surfing Association. He worked with the Coast Guard, Hawaiian Life Guard Association, Honolulu City, County Life Guards, The State of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources and Boating Division to help set big wave tow surfing guide lines, rules and regulations in Hawaii.
Our Hawaii Surf Guide and Advanced Surfing Workshops are essentially advanced level surf sessions personally guided by world renowned big wave surfer, Ken Bradshaw. To truly get the most out a surf trip to the North Shore, a North Shore Surf Guide is as close as you can get to a “golden ticket”.
Oahu’s beaches and offshore reefs offer some of the most consistent surf in the world with easy access and abundant sunshine. Without a surf guide, those factors coupled with heavy crowds of local and traveling professional surfers often result in very intimidating and often dangerous conditions for all but the very top echelon of surfers.
Hawaii can be deceivingly dangerous. An experienced and respected North Shore Surf Guide can be the difference between the best session of your life; and the worst session of your life.”
For Ken Bradshaw, when there are serious waves hitting the Islands of Hawaii, diligent planing for surf sessions begins days in advanced. Planing for advanced surf sessions involves thorough weather map analysis, team communications, surfboards selection, triple and quadruple checks of equipment that may includes but is not limited to: wave runners; sleds; PFDs; communications equipment and sometimes permits. Surfing at this level takes on a whole new set of logistical requirements and potential problems that need to be well thought out and properly planned for.
A day of big wave surfing with Ken Bradshaw often begins before dawn with additional equipment checks, yoga and meditation, prior surveying local conditions at first light. Depending on wind, swell direction, size, crowds and personal sentiment, the decision to paddle, tow, or wait often is made by 6:30am. Outside of the most commonly surfed spots on the North Shore, there are still many options for depending on the particular conditions. Often the call will be a morning of ski assisted surfing big second and third reef spots followed by a hearty vegetarian breakfast (Ken has been a vegetarian for many years) and then a second session paddle surfing as the trade winds pick up and the typical “morning sickness” conditions where off.
Between a series of nearby reefs that give Ken access to an amazing variety of outstanding surf options, third and sometimes forth surf sessions in one day are often the norm. With excellent setups on all sides of the island, Oahu is uniquely suited for a wide range of surfing objectives regardless of the conditions that facilitate classic paddle in setups with phenomenal towing opportunities.
