Mentawai Boat Trip with Ken Bradshaw

The Telo Islands, made up of nearly 101 islands are situated between Pulau Nias and the Mentawai Islands. This puts them strategically in the centre of an archipelago stretching along the west coast of Sumatra, an area, which over the last decade, has become one of the great surfing meccas of the world.

These islands have been blessed with a variety of waves suitable for all levels of surfers. Surrounded by dense tropical islands and over 45 world class waves discovered, it is still possible to search and discover new surf spots that have not yet be named.

About 150km off the coast of Sumatra, the waves are consistently 3-5 foot near the equator, dramatically increasing in size when larger swells roll up the Indian Ocean unobstructed from the Roaring Forties 3,000 nautical miles southward.  The area has high quality lefts and rights – though what makes the area a bit different and uncharacteristic for Indonesia, is a surplus of rights as compared to the heavily weighted saturation of lefts of the lower Mentawai.

The trip will launch from the gateway to the islands in the city of Padang on August 2nd and return to Padang on August 16th.

The boat will start out at the Telescopes Mentawai area before moving north towards the Telos where some of the islands in the area have been declared national parks. What this means is that surf camps aren’t allowed to set up so the breaks are only accessible by boat in this area. Waves on offer are highly kept secrets with names that differ from traveler to traveler, and boat to boat. Ken and the skipper have a few closely guarded secret spots up their sleeves so expect nothing short of epic.  There are many less intense deep water waves to suit intermediates as well as plenty of shallower, down line square barreling setups that can’t be called anything but world-class.

The Boat is an 80 ft. Indonesian-built Yacht with a veteran crew of Telos experience. Boasting a huge viewing deck, entertainment room, and galley, covered board storage and lockers. All cabins are air conditioned making it the optimal boat for a Telos Islands run!

With a capacity to sleep comfortably sleep 12, this trip will most likely be held to 10.

There are only a few spots left and they are sure to fill up fast so make your reservation here today.

This summer won’t last forever, but its memories can.
